BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) is the National Standard Body of India for developing standards, marking and quality certification of goods for providing benefits to the national economy in a number of ways – providing safe reliable quality goods; minimizing health hazards to consumers; promoting exports and imports; etc. through standardization, certification and testing.

The Indian Standards IS 15683 and IS 16018 are vital in ensuring the effectiveness, reliability, and safety of fire extinguishers in India.

IS 15683:2018 is for portable fire extinguishers which are essential firefighting tools to put out minor flames quickly and efficiently before they become larger hazards. It can be placed strategically in offices, residences and public areas, for quick and easy access to a firefighting tool. They may be used by anyone without a lot of firefighting experience.

Wheeled fire extinguishers must meet certain technical specifications and quality criteria, which are outlined in IS 16018:2012. Adherence to IS 16018:2012 guarantees that these extinguishers are engineered with strict safety and performance standards to reduce the possibility of mishaps, injuries, or property damage.

This standard establishes safety of portable fire extinguishers in the following categories:

  • Water-based;
  • Foam based;
  • Powders — ABC/BC/D Type;
  • Carbon dioxide;
  • Clean agents; and
  • Water mist type.
